A “clubhouse” is a place where people who have mental illness come to rebuild and/or regain control of their social and economic lives. An important aspect of the clubhouse model is relationships between staff and members and between individual members. Clubhouses are run jointly by “members” and staff, who work side-by-side, in a unique partnership to ensure the work of the clubhouse is completed each day. Work in the clubhouse and paid employment are recognized and valued as a vital part of recovery from mental illness. Members do not live at the clubhouse but use it as a base of community and peer support in their efforts to recover from the effects of mental illness. Toward this end, clubhouses engage in activities that help our members live successfully in the community.
